Expanding markets through breeding local crab species

The native mud crab (Scylla serrata) is an iconic species in Fiji, harvested by the coastal communities, particularly those living near mangrove forests. It is considered a delicacy and readily finds a market in urban areas and the tourist industry. However, over-harvesting of the crabs has led to declining stocks and quality of the crabs.

Recently developed technology enables the commercial breeding and farming of mud crabs from eggs, which provides opportunities for local and export
market development.
