Potato production in West Africa


Developing countries now account for more than half of the global production of potatoes. The potato’s ease of cultivation and high energy content have made it a valuable cash crop for millions of farmers.

The publication of this guide fulfills the request expressed at the workshop on the Potato Sector in West Africa, organised by the Centre for the Development of Enterprise (CDE) and its partners in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in November 2007.

Sector representatives (potato farmers, technical crop specialists and scientists) from seven countries considered it useful to consolidate the skills and experience of West Africa potato production into one document, to ensure the benefits of the farmers in this sector. The objective of this guide is not to improve or enrich the scientific knowledge of how potatoes should be produced in West Africa, but rather to provide essential knowledge to crop technicians. This information was substantially derived from the outstanding performance of local potato farmers.
