Site construction skills for bricklayers of fired clay and compressed earth bricks

Following fact-finding missions by the CDE to Ghana and Nigeria in 2002, it was discovered that the fired clay brick (FCB) and compressed earth block (CEB) sector, in both countries, has known a great improvement of its production and management capacities during the recent years, which has benefited to its development.

Despite this great improvement, the use of masonry elements has remained too marginal. According to clients, architects and other stakeholders, this is mainly due to the lack of skilled masons, which does not allow, even if they want, architects and other professionals to use these building materials.

In order to contribute to solve this problem, the CDE has implemented a set of activities to improve skills availability through specific technical workshops and publication on masonry for professionals, masons, artisans and teachers from vocational training centres.
